Useful Lasik Surgery Recuperating Tips

LASIK eye surgery is a special operation that is used to help people see clearly without the use of their contacts or eyeglasses. Many people have chosen to use this so that they can save money from having to purchase a new set of contacts each month or buying eyeglasses for $300 or more when their old ones break.

This is a medical procedure and because of this people should understand completely what will occur before, during, and after the procedure is finished. We encourage you to speak with your doctor about all of the risks and complications and what they will be doing to repair the problems with your eyes. But we want to take the time to show you how you will recuperate when the operation is finished.

When the operation is complete the doctor will place a protective eye patch over the area to help. This is because for a few hours or a couple of days they will be sensitive to light. They also want to make sure that no debris or dust enters into the eye to cause an infection. The time you have to wear this will vary on the patient.

You will need to have someone take you home when the process is finished. You will feel a small amount of discomfort and pain – but this should not last for very long. The doctor will most likely prescribe a moderate pain reliever to help with this. It is possible that your eyes will itch – but this will pass. You should never apply pressure to the eyes or scratch them.

Give your eyes time to readjust to the new vision that they have been given and you time to get over the pain. Take a couple of days off of work to recuperate from LASIK surgery and to ensure that you can handle everything. The best thing you could do is to stay off your feet and do not do anything that will hurt your eyes – including any kind of contact sport.

If the patient can adjust to this correction them he may not use glasses.

Weight Loss Surgery Now Covered by Insurance – But With Strings Attached

If you are one of the millions of Americans who are overweight or obese, good news – your weight loss surgery will be covered by your insurance carrier. The bad news is, of course, that coverage comes with many conditions attached to it. Weight loss surgery is performed on very overweight individuals who can’t seem to lose weight even with a healthy diet and exercise regimen. There are four types of procedures available: adjustable gastric band, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, biliopancreatic diversion with a duodenal switch and vertical sleeve gastrectomy.

If you are insured under Medicare, your weight loss surgery has traditionally been covered under co-morbid illnesses like high blood pressure, diabetes and sleep apnea, meaning that the patient was qualified to have surgery only if he or she had one of these conditions. However, it was only recently that Medicare implicitly recognized obesity as an illness through changes in their policy statement. These changes were seen as an acknowledgment by the social insurance program of the high monetary and health costs of obesity and overweight.

For private insurance companies, coverage of weight loss surgery is a way for them to cut costs. It costs less for the carrier to pay for a gastric bypass or gastrectomy then to continue to shoulder the costs of diabetes medicine and treatment for a lifetime. However, the increased costs and number of procedures performed has led private insurance companies to make it more difficult to obtain approval. To illustrate, before approving surgery many insurance companies typically require written documentation from the patient that they had undergone six months to a year of a continually medically supervised diet.
